Baby Sitting Tips

Babysitting is a big responsibility that must not be taken lightly. You must protect yourself, as well as the children you will be taking care of.

Before accepting the job, get specific instructions such as:
bulletNumber and ages of the children
bulletEmergency telephone numbers
bulletBed times
bulletFeeding instructions
bulletMedicines
bulletOther information about personal habits and what is expected of you
 

Knowing first aid procedures before you take on babysitting jobs will help prepare you for emergencies and may save a life.

NEVER...

bulletallow strangers into the house unless your employer specifically informs you to let them in.
bullettell a caller that you are the babysitter alone with the children. Take a message and tell them that the person they are calling will return the call momentarily.
bulletgo outside to investigate suspicious noises or activities. Turn on outside lights and CALL THE POLICE. Be sure that all the doors and windows are locked.

Babysitter Checklist:

bulletName, address and phone number of employer.
bulletDirections to job location.
bulletArrange for transportation to location and home.
bulletLocation and phone number of where employer can be reached in case of emergency.
bulletAlternate person to contact for emergency if employer cannot be reached.
bulletAny special instructions from employer.
bulletLocations and instructions on use of safety equipment (fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, etc.)
bulletWalk through the house with employer to ensure all doors and windows are locked.
bulletturn on outside lights.
bulletHave emergency numbers and note taking materials by the telephone.
 

Going over these items with your employer will not only make you prepared, but will also show your employer that you are responsible.
